Concealed Carry of Deadly Weapons Training Class
Back in 1996, the Kentucky
Legislative body passed House Bill 40 that will allow Kentucky residents to
legally carry a concealed weapon upon meeting certain requirements, applying
for, and receiving a CCDW permit. A prerequisite to CCDW application is the
successful completion of a specific training course administered by the
Department of Criminal Justice Training.
Since 1996, as a member of the Clark County Fish and Game Club, I have agreed
to provide this predefined training course on an as-needed basis. For the last
several years, the class has been offered in both Spring and Fall at the Fish
and Game club to accommodate member requests.
Please see the FAQ information below regarding upcoming class
information. Also, feel free to visit Kentucky
State Police-CCDW web site for
additional information.

Frequently Asked
Questions
What does it cost?
For CCFGC members the cost is $25.00 (this is the fee that is charged to me by
the State for everyone who takes the course). For non-members we ask for
$50.00 in order to recoup some of the costs. As a comparison, all Lexington
gun shops charge $75.00 We’re not doing this to make money.
How long does it take?
The required length of time around 6 hours. We will start promptly at 9:00am and
plan on not being turned loose until 4:00pm. Call me if you have specific
questions about the class time.
What are we gonna do about lunch?
“Hello, Domino’s?” Naw, we’ll make sure that some type of decent lunch
is fixed on-site. We’ll also have coffee and donuts ready for ya in the
morning.
Do I need to bring anything else other than what’s listed above?
Nope.
What about the live fire exercise?
You’ll be required to hit 11 out of 20 shots at a B-21 silhouette target
(yeah, like we all know what THAT is…) from 7 yards, aiming… while
listening to range commands and practicing SAFE GUN HANDLING SKILLS!
Are there any other tests?
Yes. A 25 question, multiple-choice, open-book exam. Pass with a score >
70%.
Who has to take the class?
Anyone who wants to apply for a license to carry a concealed weapon must take
this course. This is a (pardon the pun) one-shot deal. Upon successful
completion of the class – you are certified for life. You may then apply for
the actual license from your local sheriff’s office – (which must be
renewed every five years.)
Who can take the course?
Anyone who is at least 21 years old and has been a Kentucky resident for at
least six months before applying. Additionally, a person is NOT eligible under
several other circumstances such as (but not limited to): been a convicted
felon, unlawful user of or addicted to controlled substances, judged mentally
defective (whoops – there goes a few), an illegal alien, dishonorably
discharged, convicted of domestic violence, has two or more convictions for
DUI.
Will my gun be registered?
No. Both the CCDW Training Class and CCDW license registers YOU as an
individual. You can carry any pistol you choose.
I don’t live in Clark County – can I still take it here?
Sure. You can take the course anywhere in Kentucky, by any certified
instructor.
Are you the only instructor around here?
Absolutely not! There are several other fully qualified and capable
instructors in Clark County. While I personally don’t know their schedules,
I would be more than happy to provide you with names of a few other folks who
teach the class. You may also obtain a full listing of current instructors
from your local sheriff’s office. Most of the Central Ky area gun stores
offer the class on a routine basis.
When is the next class? How often do you offer it?
Check at the Monthly meetings, the website or call me. Due to lack of demand,
I have reduced my schedule for the CCF&GC to twice per year – once in
the spring and once on the fall. Also, FYI, I have also ceased teaching
classes for Lexington area gun stores.
Can my non-member friend come along?
As long as we have open slots, yes.
What about another group of friends who want to take the course?
I’d be happy to try and help you out. Please remember that currently, my
primary focus is to offer the class for CCF&GC members – and to do so as
cheaply as possible. This is simply a way of offering some service to my local
club. While I have given a number of “specialty” classes (ladies only, all
beginners, or simply a group of co-workers), I prefer not to use the club’s
facilities when the group primarily consists of non-members. Logistics for a
training room, shooting range, and convenient timing will be coordinated by
myself and the ring-leader of the interested party. We’ll work on a
reasonable fee – as stated before, I’m not doing this to earn extra income
or as a side business (I’m happy with my current job – thank you very
much!)
I haven’t shot in awhile and I’m worried about being embarrassed.
The course isn’t to see who can shoot the best. The course is designed to
disseminate information regarding the law about concealed carry, SAFETY,
principles of marksmanship, SAFETY, and a few other topics. I’m there to
help you learn about concealed carry, SAFETY, and theory behind shooting a
little bit better. We aren’t competing for a position on the Olympic team.
At my discretion, I am allowed to “conduct as many practice rounds as
necessary, until he or she feels comfortable with the students skill level and
ability to pass.” Once again – the course is designed to help you. If you
would like to stay until everybody else has left, and THEN do your live fire
– no problem, I’m there for ya… If you’re looking for some additional
assistance before/after the official class time, I’d be more than happy to
talk/shoot anytime!
